I just found out that one of my favorite artists died. He was 101 years old and has shared an incredible amount of beautiful with the world. Wil Barnet’s work always elicits an admiring “wow!” reaction from me. He did some linear sketchy things with splashes of color and Picassoish abstractions, but I most enjoy his serene domestic scenes, often involving a clothed female figure with a cat or book. He uses large flat shapes of rich color, which are simplified and elegant, and which are simultaneously representative image and strong abstract design.
Here’s a small sample lifted from a site that will sell you a print of it. Search for more images if you love it.
